Introduction:

Follow us on our 2011 Summer Adventure. We will journey across the country to the Old West and the First National Park in this country. We're home basing from Sundance, Wyoming, then traveling out to Yellowstone. This blog will include the trip there, but (as previous years have shown) I may be having too much fun, or not enough wi-fi to complete the blog all the way through. (don't worry I'll catch it up when I get home)

Please Enjoy Reading, as I enjoy sharing this with you.

Re-Cap of the Past Few Days

The second day in Sundance we did pretty much the same general touristy loop as the day before showing them to couple of Kathy and Al's friends who had arrived the night before.

This tour included a few hours to get really acquainted with the sleepy town of Sundance (because of one dead battery and a Harley Dealership). Sundance has one short main street that includes a bank, post office, police station, clerks office, hardware store, restaurant, Harley dealer and old bank. Oh, don't forget about the horse trailer up the middle of the street.

This time we went up to see Devils tower.

On the way back down we stopped at the prairie dog field and took some pictures. I got a bunch of pictures of them the first time we went... So none of the critters this time.

After that we headed off to Aladdin, population 15. Had a yummy lunch then headed off to the Stone House. There we found our names that we wrote 2 years prior and added some fresh ink.

And alex found a new friend.

From Aladdin we headed over to Sturgis.

Not so many pics from this trip on my phone. I will be adding photos from my camera shortly.

Sorry for the delay!

Catching Up

I taking this little bit of time alone to catch up, post a few pictures. Like I had said earlier, once I get out here I probably would fall behind. The past two days we have been pretty busy.

Day One here we spent bit at the local car wash cleaning the bikes. Then we headed off to Devils Tower, and had lunch at the KOA gift shop and restaurant there.

After that we rode through Heulet, a small western town where the buildings are built to look old western-ish, sleepy but more done for tourists.

We then headed to Aladdin, population 15. Yeah, nothing really special. Very hot so we got an some water at the old country market.

Then back to Sundance we went.
Alex and I check out a dirt road and found these.

And like all horses, they turned their back to me rather rudely and took off.

The day ended with these pictures.

What beautiful sunsets here.

Sight Seeing.

Well we're back at camp after a day of sightseeing. First good night of sleep, and fell asleep right away, and early.

Early to bed early to rise, right. I was awake at four AM. Laid around in bed until six-ish. It was nice to be up early for a change.

The view here is beautiful!

Day One in Wyoming

Sorry for the lack of updates yesterday. I may have started not cranky but I definitely ended my day that way.

Here are the photo I missed posting.

I know it doesn't seem like much, but this is a photo of a cool huge bull head on the side of the road

It was such a clear day you could see the beginnings of the Badlands over 30 miles from the highway

Larger more defined hills from two hours from the Black Hills

There are the start of the Black Hills in the distance about one hour out

Well those are yesterday's photos, with not much else to report.

Heading Westward - Day Three

We now travel with the rising sun over our right shoulder looking through a windshield splattered with bugs from the night before.

I didn't post anything after Indiana yesterday because honestly, there wasn't anything to post. Indiana rolled on into Illinois where we were stuck in stand still traffic around Joliette. Then Illinois rolled into Iowa that rolled on forever.

Here are some photos for your viewing pleasure

Crossing the Mississippi on I80

Iowa 80 Truck Stop - Largest in the US (featured on the travel channel)

Last night we decided to head on into the night to make some headway and shorten today's trip.
I managed to catch these sunset shots as we drove.

Not too shabby for dealing with this bumpy concrete highway.
Dusk gave way to darkness, as we drove through the flooded areas of the Missouri Valley. Sand bags lined either side of the narrowed highway with signs that read "water on roadway" pump hoses hung over the sandbags into the roadway.
We pulled into a quiet Walmart parking lot last night at about eleven exhausted.
Alex and I switched beds and I slept like a baby, there was no crankiness from me this morning. Bright eyed and bushy tailed as the sun crested the grassy plain.

The type of devastation to the area wasn't apparent until we got on the highway this morning. The banks of the Missouri river in Sioux City were high, trees, roads, and houses underwater. The highway bridged over an intersection with water partway up the traffic lights. A row boat tied to a light post. A little further down the road was a marina, all of the boats up on land with the building up to it's windows in water, and the main dock at least 8 ft under water. Last night weather for the area stated the river was already at 29ft above and was expected to rise to 35 by tonight. ...just wow.

We crossed into South Dakota about an hour ago, and just got back onto I90 heading due west. According to the GPS we should hit Sundance WY (our destination) in 6 hrs and 25 min.
I'll check back in with you all a bit later.

Day Two - Westward Bound

I gotta admit I was a bit cranky when I woke up at 6 am this morning. Sleep did not come easy (or at all) for me last night. My first glance out of the window was at the dark cloudy sky, air thick with humidity and a red glow to the clouds. I got up, got dressed, brushed my teeth and exited the trailer. My mood immediately improved at the sight of turbulent skyes over green and gold fields of corn. I was ready to go.

And we were off....

I just love old Iron Bridges

10:12 am Crossing the Border into Indiana

We're stopped just outside of Southbend Indiana for a quick rest, here are some postcards that I bought.

Heading Westward

Day One

Well we started a bit late, we were up late finishing the last of the packing, laundry and such. We hit the highway at 8:12 am with not much traffic (luckily).
There's not much to say really, 90w in Massachusetts is just plain ole boring, but it sure beats that two lane backroad we've used to cross through Connecticut. We hit the New York border at around 10:15am, not bad timing for 65 mph. This new truck tackles the hills like butta, no bobbing either, pretty comfortable ride.

Quick shot of the railroad bridge from the Castleton Bridge over the Hudson River.

Well we motored on through upper state New York without any issues. Hudson river valley was nice.

But man I though Ohio was boring, New York is even worse.

At about 5 we crossed over the Pennsylvania border. Again not much to report.

At around 6 Ohio's border was in our sites. I got my first view of the great lakes, (Lake Erie).

It's funny, with the grey hazy sky and still waters it looked exactly how I've always imagined it. Though I was surprised that the water touched the horizon. I guess the view I got was a perfect position to get the feel of the "Great Lakes". It reminded me of a scene from the horrible movie The Fog. ;-)

Cleveland Ohio

About an hour later we exited the Ohio Turnpike at mile marker 118 into Milan Ohio, where we met up with a Marine buddy of Alex's from Miramar. We pulled the camper into his driveway and hunkered down for the night.
